When filled, the volume of propane is approximately 80% of the total tank capacity to allow for expansion.
A Standard 27-gallon tank holds 23.6 gallons and is generally installed for cooking only.
A standard 50-gallon tank holds 47.2 gallons of propane and is generally installed for residential cooking and clothes drying.
A standard 120-gallon tank holds 99.1 gallons of propane and is generally installed for residential hot water or space heating with sufficient storage if you add a range or clothes dryer.
A standard 500-gallon tank holds 400 gallons of propane and is generally installed for central heating and small commercial applications.
A standard 1000-gallon tank holds 800 gallons of propane and is generally installed for commercial and industrial applications. Large commercial and industrial installations may require multiple 1000-gallon tanks.

Underground propane tanks vary in size from 120 to 1000 gallons of propane and are much less visible than a standard propane tank. Underground propane tank installations can be for use of anything from cooking and generators to heat and hot water.
